Learning to switch off
In a world where we are constantly engaged on our phones, at work, on our computers and so on 'learning to switch off' can be something that is overlooked until you are so burnt out you need a holiday. Switching off is so important for a more mindful life and practicing it daily will help you feel more present and less stressed.
I just thought i'd put together a few ways I have learnt to help me switch off as a daily practice:
take a break: I like to take regular breaks throughout my day if I am doing a lot of work on my computer. This helps keep stress levels low and gives you a moment to relax.
schedule: I like to organise non work-related activities and events for the end of the day. This helps to keep my mind off work and really gives my brain enough time to switch off and relax. This could be something simple like going to the gym or going for a walk.
enjoy now: when you have a break try and focus on the 'now' and block all of your other thoughts away. Enjoy the fresh air on your face and concentrate on your breathing to help you be more 'present' and in tune with your body.
hobby: I have just started reading again, i find getting a book and being so absorbed in the pages is really therapeutic. It also makes a welcome change to anything computer or tech based (which is what I spend a lot of time doing) and allows me to relax. Try and find something that is the opposite to what you usually do every day such as reading, walking, exercise, cooking, gardening, drawing, colouring and so on.
rituals: Implement some 'rituals' into your day. As soon as I wake up I have my hot Apple Cider Vinegar drink which signals to me that my day is about to start. Similarly at the end of the day I have a hot shower and I find this helps me unwind and wash away everything that has gone on that day and now I can relax.
tech detox: I try my very best not to look at my phone or computer after 8 pm. I find this helps me concentrate on 'me time' and be more present. It also helps me sleep better as my brain hasn't been exposed to 'blue light' or any work related e-mails or messages.
