Small steps to improve your healthy lifestyle
I often get people ask me things like 'what food do I eat everyday?', 'how many times do I work out in a week?', 'do I eat carbs?' and so on but to be honest I don't really follow any hard and fast rules. Yes, I may may restrict carbs for certain periods, I might go through periods of heavy exercise but I also might have a week where I eat pizza, pasta and doughnuts and I am more than happy to admit that (I'm human just like you!!).
What I have learnt is that being 'healthy' doesn't have an expiry date it is something you should make as a lifestyle choice, to learn about your body, your mindset and your goals. I know exactly what I need to do to feel good inside, to nourish my body and my soul to have tighter abs and a leaner look but we all have ups and downs and sugar cravings, too many nights out or events to go to and that is fine so don't be too hard on yourself.
I wanted to throw together some tips i've learnt along the way to help you get back into healthy and active living without making too many sacrifices and hopefully they will inspire you to take health and fitness to the next level:
SIMPLE ACTIVITIES: If your exercise regime has dropped start with easy exercises such as a nice brisk walk in the morning, getting your bike out to cycle to work, doing a 20 minute mat routine at home when you wake up - these things will help you ease you back into fitness.
CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE: If you feel like you are too 'busy' for exercise try and find ways to implement these things into your daily routine like walking to work, cycling to work, getting out for 20-30 minutes on your lunch break and so on.
DIET EVALUATION: I know that when i'm feeling particularly unhealthy it is because all of my good habits have gone out of the window. Take a minute to think about what you are consuming and if you have time make a food diary for the week. This is an excellent way to figure out where you are slipping up. Often you already know the answers and it might be simple things like restricting alcohol to a Friday night only, giving yourself one cheat day a week and not six, saying no to cake for morning tea.
PLAN: If you can write out a diet plan for the next week or so or at least plan your meals this will REALLY help you be more accountable and will help you shop accordingly.
FRIENDS, FAMILY, COLLEAGUES: Talk to your friends, family and work colleagues about your healthy lifestyle. If you have support from these people there is a high chance they might want to join you making the whole process a lot easier!
RESEARCH: Do some research into healthy eating and fitness. Find some tasty new recipes you can make and some fun fitness activities you can do with your friends. I recently did aerial yoga, trampolining and dance cardio - all of these things were so fun and made my workout so enjoyable!
